I Know From My Experience in Videogames

I know from my experience in videogames
how to handle this situation, step aside.

I step into the dangerous room and to the left,
I find cover,
I press my back against it,
I

don’t have a gun.
I look around for a gun.

No gun is spinning on the floor nearby.
No gun is glowing on the shelving unit.
No gun is hidden somewhere on my body.
No gun is forthcoming.

Nobody is shooting at me.
Nobody comes through the door. I stand up.

“It’s safe,” I say, and wave you in.

You are perplexed. Not more so than me.

The safe room is full of
things. I examine each of the
things
carefully.

I search the drawers and pick through the bits and pieces on the shelves. Here are some butterflies under glass. I search the butterflies under glass for hidden meanings I count their wings and the dots on their wings and I consider the colours.

I compare the colours of the butterfly wings with the colours of three dice I find in a drawer. The dice are different colours to each other and they are different colours to the butterfly wings and they are different colours to the dots on the butterfly wings.

I consider the numbers facing up on the dice.
6, 3, 1.
I compare this to the numbers of dots on the butterfly wings. They are different numbers.

Wait.
The door is not locked.
The door is not locked.

I open the door. We are free to go. I hold the door open and say,

“After you.”

And you go through
arching your eyebrow.

We are in a hallway. It stretches in either direction, in either direction it turns a corner and disappears. I consult the map.

I don’t have a map.
I search my pockets for the map, I don’t have one.
I look up and to the left, up and to the right, I don’t have one.
I search myself inside and out for the map I don’t have one.

We go to the right and turn the corner and open a door and step out into a garden. You say it’s a nice garden you look at the flowers you sit down on a bench and study me closely you look

concerned.

I also look at the flowers. Yes. They are good flowers. I take one but there’s nowhere to put it so I drop it. But I can take another one, it can be taken so I take it but there’s nowhere to put it so I drop it.

I take a flower
and I drop it.

I take a flower
and I drop it.

I am doing
what can be done.

Until there are no more flowers.
Now there are no more flowers.

“We have exhausted that avenue of investigation,”
I say to you and you say to me,

“What do you mean ‘we’?”
