Driving in the Country is Bloody Murder

I’m driving up to a murder
and realize I’ve never seen
a crow hit by a car.
Does that mean I’ve witnessed
evolution in my lifetime—
that all the crows whacked
by tires or windshields
were whacked between, let’s say,
the 50s and the 70s,
removing the slow and
slow-witted from the crow
gene pool? Or does it mean we lag—
before we even pressed a clay-
covered palm to a cave
wall they had developed perfect
timing to look straight at me—right
through the lens and into
the retina—pick up
and veer off just in time, before
I think, “Jeez, I might hit this one,”
making me so nervous
I swerve, putting myself
and the elderly woman in
the SUV behind me at
risk of serious
injury or worse?
